The following document represents an easily researched history of
mages in
Providence and the surrounding area. More detailed research may reveal
more. As always some background may be know to others depending on
a
character's personal history.
History of Providence – Mage perspective
17th Century – Roger Williams, fleeing religious persecution
flees
Massachusetts for Rhode Island. He establishes the colony. This
pattern
would be continued any number of times over the coming years.
1686 – According to members of the Spirit Courts who were
present, the first
European Mage in the Rhode Island area arrives. Others would follow
1768 – Archimedes D’Augustine arrives in Rhode Island.
While here, the
Mysterium scholar writes a brief history of the region and conducts
a census
of the region’s resources. There are no known surviving copies
of his book.
1770-1789 – Birth of the United States – as with any
American families, the
mages of Rhode Island were drawn into the Revolutionary War and
the birth of
the nation which rose out of it.
1802 – Mysterium establishes an Atheaneum in Providence.
This represents
one of the first attempts by the Orders to establish a permanent
presence in
the state
Early 19th century – During this period the mage population
in the region
grows a great deal, primarily representing members of the Orders
who begin
to take a greater interest in the resources of the region.
1858 – The Storm strikes Rhode Island in September of 1858
- The very fabric
of the tapestry was twisted by the Storm. Hallows became cursed,
and
haunted by incredibly dangerous spirits. The Gauntlet was weakened
throughout the region and in some places torn open altogether. Strange
and
dangerous magical creatures were summoned, or created by the storm
of magic.
Fate and Time were warped into strange new patterns as well. The
lucky
mages died, the unlucky ones survived to try to live in the new
world which
was created.
1858-1875 – Reconstruction – Those mages that still
lived in Rhode Island
worked to rebuild what was lost. They had also found some of the
effects.
Hallows had moved. Ley lines were gone or redirected. Entire new
and
dangerous Spirit Courts had taken up residence. By 1875 only a few
mages
still clung to the hope of reclaiming the magic that was lost, most
others
begin to accept that the region is cursed.
1901 – A Cabal of young Order Mages attempts to found a Concillium
in
Providence. This is the first significant attempt to create a magical
organization in Rhode Island since the Storm.
1904 – A series of power struggles in the new Concilium break
it apart.
Several mages are killed in the struggles. Most of the remainder
leave the
city.
1911 – The Mistress claims Regency of several of the former
Concillium’s
powerful Hallows.
1919 – In the wake of the World War, a small group of Mages
who have
awakened in the Trenches of France return to RI. They group together
for
protection against the Mistress’s Court.
1921 – Six members of this new community are butchered by
the Mistress,
after the apparent signing of a truce.
1933 – A larger group of mages attempt to reclaim some of
the resources lost
in Rhode Island. The mission falls apart as competing interests
cause the
group to break apart. This time there are no fatalities. Following
another
failure some members of the Acanthus begin to study the possibility
that the
Curse extends to any group that tries to take control of Rhode Island.
1960’s – A number of mages awaken during this period.
Around Rhode Island
many of these mages operated singly, or in small groups. These seem
to
flourish, while those who bond together into larger organizations
seem to
fail spectacularly.
Current times – Several other failures in Rhode Island have
left the state
without magical leadership. Other accomplishments have been achieved
however. There are those who believe that the Curse is weakening,
as more
Hallows are cleansed, and more of the old artifacts are found.
